  • ( ) Whitby curler settles an old score

    Two rinks that hooked up in the quarter-finals of last year's Whig-Standard Bonspiel were first-round opponents last night as play began in the 75th edition of the men's curling event.

    Jim Sills of Cataraqui Golf and Country Club defeated Jeff Whelan of Whitby last year. Sills advanced to the semifinal before losing to the eventual champion Bob Stoll of Weston.

    Whelan, who has 1992 Whig champion Steve Small on his rink, got some revenge last night with a 6-2 win over Sills at Cataraqui.

    Forty of the bonspiel's 64 rinks began play last night at host Royal Kingston Curling Club and at Cataraqui..

    Whelan was up against 2006 champion Chris Barkley of Royal Kingston in a late game at the host club.

    Also playing their second game in the undefeated main-event bracket last night were first-draw winners Don Presley of Brockville, Ivan Suddgergaard and Bob Tester of Cataraqui and Rich Waller of Royal Kingston. More>>
