    I don't want children or grown-ups to die. I don't want their pet dogs and cats to die. I don't even want squirrels, skunks, raccoons or deer to die. I just want what we call the "major arteries" of our road system to be more about moving than stopping.

    Supposedly Route 1 is also known as the Newburyport Turnpike. But that is long since obsolete. Turnpike implies that you get to drive at something like a highway speed without having to stop every couple of miles. Maybe that's the way it was.

    But no more. There are already nine traffic lights on Route 1 between Danvers and Salisbury - one in Danvers at North Street, two in Topsfield at Route 97 and at Ipswich Road, one in Ipswich at Linebrook Road, and two in Rowley at Route 133 and just a quarter-mile up the road at the entrance to the Rowley Marketplace. He has crafted Dirt Devils for U.S. discount superstore Target, skin-care packaging for Prada, the Semiramis Hotel in Athens and 2,000 other objects currently in production. We caught up with the 47-year-old at Hotel Le Germain on a stopover in Toronto, his former hometown, between engagements in Chile and Belgrade.     A All Toronto does is worry about where it stands next to another city. Toronto should not try to compete with other cities -- Toronto must cultivate its own style.   • ( ) Chattacon Science Fiction Convention Returns Jan. 25-27

    Chattacon 33 will be held Jan. 25-27 at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo.

    Chattacon is an annual convention for fans of science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction as well as offering a wide variety of programming events including workshops for filmmaking, writing, art, origami, e-publishing, podcasting and even belly dancing. Events are for all ages.

    The three-day convention will host other events such as sword dueling demonstrations, Robot Battles, Laser Tag, gaming, puppet shows, independent films, the Masquerade Costume Contest and live music performances from local bands.

    The expansive Dealers Room houses up to 60 vendors selling everything from books, comics, collectibles and gaming supplies to costumes, leatherworks, kilts, jewelry and swords. More>>
